Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School, Bridgend

Christ At The Centre is a digitally printed mural on a 10m x 6m room divider for Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School. The design was developed in close consultation with the school and the architects to create a work that reflected the ethos of the school and provide a dynamic focal artwork in the atrium of the building.

The moveable screen, behind which is the hall and stage, can be opened to create an amphitheatre in the middle of the school atrium. A good working relationship with the lead architect from HLM and the clients from the Archdiocese of Cardiff also helped very much. The design was later adapted by the interior design team and used for the balustrade manifestations that expanded the design into three dimensions.

.The building won the Eisteddfod Gold Medal for Architecture in 2012.

It was a wonderful commission to work on, as I was able to visit the site regularly. This meant I could develop and revise the design responding to the scale and proportion of the space as the building went up, and also take into consideration multiple view points and distances that the artwork would be viewed from.
